Periodontics and dental implants

A periodontist is a dentist who specialises in treating the structures that support your teeth such as your gums, jawbone and ligaments.

Dent8 Dental is proud to offer this dental service with Dr Michael Barber.

Essential factors when choosing a local family dentist

Early periodontal disease

Early periodontal disease begins as an inflammation of your gums, known as gingivitis. The area where your teeth meet your gum (the gingiva) may become irritated, swollen or red. You may notice it bleeds easily when you brush your teeth.

Gingivitis is common but can be prevented or treated through good oral care.

We recommend that you:
Floss daily
Brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day to prevent a build-up of plaque
See your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and clean to remove any tartar (hardened plaque) under your gumline before it triggers gingivitis
Maintain good overall health
- Manage any underlying conditions like diabetes
- Cease smoking and vaping

Advanced periodontal disease

If periodontal disease is not caught in its early stages, the disease may progress to periodontitis, meaning:

  1. The gum may pull away from your tooth creating a little pocket filled with bacteria and pus.
  2. Inflammation extends deeper into the tissue and bone.
  3. Your tooth loosens, drifts out of its position and may eventually fall out.
  4. Untreated periodontal disease is linked with worsening of diabetes and heart disease, and is associated with premature birth

Treating periodontal disease

Treatment for periodontal disease aims to clean out any pockets surrounding your teeth and prevent (or address) damage to the gum or bone.

Depending on how advanced your condition is, treatment may involve:

Don’t stain easily

Scaling

We use an ultrasonic device and specialised instruments to remove tartar and bacteria from the surface of your tooth (crown and root)

Teeth Whitening

Root planing

We smooth the root surface making it harder for tartar and bacteria to build up and helping your gums to reattach to your tooth

Full Mouth Rehabilitation

Antibiotics

We may prescribe an antibiotic mouth rinse, gel or tablet to stop a bacterial infection

Tooth dental filling

Surgery

We perform several types of dental surgery to treat advanced periodontal disease such as gum grafts

Dental implants

Missing teeth can affect more than your appearance and self-confidence. A missing tooth can:

Alter your bite
Cause surrounding teeth to shift
Weaken your jaw muscles
Increase the risk of other dental problems.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant looks like a metal or ceramic screw and acts like an artificial tooth root. It’s capped with an implant crown, matched to the shape and colour of your surrounding teeth.

A dental implant aims to restore your appearance and improve your oral function so you can eat, talk and maintain your oral hygiene more easily.

Dental implants

Dental implants procedure

Following the extraction of a tooth, it is usual to wait 3 months for the jawbone to recover so that it can support a dental implant. It is then a further 3 months after the implant is placed for it to be strong enough to have the implant crown attached.

Under a local anaesthetic, we place the dental implant into your jawbone where your original tooth was.

Healing time

Healing time

Over the next 3 months, your bone grows around the implant and holds it in place.

Implant crown

We create an implant crown, which looks like an artificial tooth, improving your appearance and oral health.

At Dent8, we’re dedicated to holistic dentistry, offering metal-free crowns custom-made by Brisbane’s renowned “Y’s Dental Studio,” which uses top-quality Swiss and German dental materials and follows environmentally responsible techniques.
